In 1996, while reading Depak Chopra’s books, he often quoted Jelauddin Rumi, a 12th century poet. I liked what I was reading and was more interested in Rumi’s poetry. I found out that until the age of 37 Rumi was a popular scholar. It was then that he met a mighty wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz who changed Rumi’s life forever. After Shams passed away, Rumi transformed from teacher into artist and poet. Now, 800 years later, in the 21st century it is reborn in our western world where he removes us from the mundane into the kaleidoscope that his vision has brought.

I have to thank people like Coleman Barks, a poetry professor at the University of Georgia who has the knack of translating Rumi’s poetry into English, otherwise we may never have seen the life of poetry, art and imagination he bequeathed. For example:

Beyond the ideas of evil and doing well There is a field, I will meet you there When the soul will lie down on that grass The world is too full to talk about it. Ideas. The language, even the sentence, does not make any sense to each other.

Rumi was multifaceted in his work. He was compassionate, or perhaps ferocious, or a hypocrite. Depending on the day, all sides of human nature flowed through him. Still, I always felt like he was a friend he would love despite the atrocities of human nature.

For all these centuries Rumi has inspired, encouraged and entertained her readers. Although popular over the centuries, recognition of his genius began in the West about 100 years ago when English translations appeared. Indeed, interest in his poetry has exploded since popular icons such as Depak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Demi Moore and Julia Cameron often mention him and express gratitude for the gift he created and share his genius with theirs. numerous followers.

More than celebrities mention Rumi. You’ll find his poems in various books on creativity, psychology, business, self-help, and spirituality, as well as calendars, bookmarks, and greeting cards.

o The illustrators paint her passionate images of love,
o The dancers dive into his mystical metaphors
o Musicians improvise
o The poets recite his ecstatic verses.

In recognition of its worldwide influence, UNESCO has designated 2007 as the Year of Rumi. When I read some of Rumi’s poems, the problems of the day seem to lift off my shoulders and I wonder why we are moved to devote our time and service to others. Yet we call it as Rumi did.

Come, come whoever you are: vagabond, worshiper, lover of departure. It does not matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. Come, even if you have broken your vow a thousand times. To come,
