Torvald Helmer, one of the main characters in the play, is somehow “right”. He prides himself on earning a comfortable living for himself and his family and for having earned a high status in society, all through honest and hard work. Her wife, Nora, is a moral woman, so much so that at the beginning of the show she had this childish innocence and naivety. Her worst lie could easily have been sneaking into macaroons to eat, disobeying her husband’s rules against her sweets.
It is emphasized that a parent is obligated to lead a moral life to establish an exemplary lifestyle for their children. During their marriage, Nora and Torvald tried to provide that kind of environment for their three children. With the way they hold their moral convictions, they seemed to have fulfilled their parental responsibility quite well. He stayed that way until Nora revealed that by the time her father was on his deathbed, Torvald fell ill. She was forced to borrow enough money to travel to southern Italy, where Torvald could take care of her health. She committed two crimes: first, she borrowed money without her husband’s consent, and second, she forged a signature. The second crime she was guilty of mirrored Krogstad’s, and she was likely to follow her fate. Krogstad became a moral outcast in society for his crime and lost his career as a lawyer along with his credibility. He was left with nothing but a corrupt name.
To justify Krogstad’s dismissal from the bank, Torvald revealed to his wife the distaste he had for a corrupt man like Krogstad. Torvald explained how Krogstad passes on his immorality to his children, “… Because such an atmosphere infects and poisons the entire life of a home … And for years this Krogstad has gone home and poisons its own. children with lies and deceit. ”
Nora believed that she too would bring similar corruption to her children, wreaking havoc on her entire home. Nora’s innocence and morality shone when she was willing to sacrifice her life or leave her home just so that her husband would not suffer the consequences of her crime, and her too, to support the purity of his children. she. However, Torvald was blinded by anger and her sensitive concern for what society thought, so he forbade her to raise her own children; he could not trust them under the care of an “incapable woman”.
In a parallel situation, Dr. Rank has fallen ill and is getting worse by the minute, a disease is ravaging his body. In the days of his heyday, Doctor Rank’s father had enjoyed his numerous mistresses, now Rank has taken punishment. Dr. Rank considered it an injustice to “pay for someone else’s sins. My poor innocent backbone has to pay for my father’s entertainment.” The disease he has, the consumption of the spine (syphilis), is an enduring symbol of his father’s depravity and indulgence. As we see in the instances of Nora and Dr. Rank, parents can easily pass on their corruption to their children. Nora’s case, however, is a mere abstract notion that Torvald manipulated her into thinking. However, a parent must remain moral for their child’s proper upbringing.
