We all have a great idea for new products at least once. Maybe it’s a way to simplify something in your work or maybe it’s a new kind of toy for kids. So, if you’re done slogging under an ungrateful boss from 9 to 5, why not try to take your idea big? In this article we will discuss some of the specifics for making your own inflatable products so that you can start presenting your idea or even take them straight to get ready for sale.
Preparation work
An idea of the appearance of your product is not enough to do this. You have to start thinking about specific sizes and models to make it. Just having a hot air sealing service will not allow you to make that inflatable product! You will need pictures or a drawing of what your product should look like so you can explain it to other people.
You will also need to make sure that you have the rights to return the product legally. If you are unsure, find it yourself or consider seeking help from a law firm that specializes in patents, trademarks and copyrights. If you are serious about making your product, especially if it is a new idea, we recommend that you protect your IP and make sure you cannot be sued for using an idea that is already available!
Get some blueprints
Now is the time to take product making seriously. You will need at least one prototype if you want to present the product to a company or investor and you want it to look good! You will need to set up some design templates for your inflatable product. You can do this yourself or consider hiring an engineer who is familiar with inflatable products. You will also need to define which material you want to use. In most cases vinyl will be your choice, but if you are designing something heavier you can discuss this with your prototype builder.
Get a builder
To make something inflatable we know it has to be leak proof, sewing it at home won’t work! So how do you go about putting the pieces together to ensure a leak-proof seal?
This is where a hot air or hot wedge sealing service comes into play. These services are what you will need and they specialize in the processing of vinyl or other plastic based materials that you will need to manage. If you’re not familiar with what this service offers, take a look at an inflatable pool toy. You will notice a smooth plastic seam on all edges or along to give it shape. This is a hot wedge sealing service.
There are several methods they can use to make your product. It will depend on the materials and product design which method is to be used. Here is a brief breakdown:
Radio Frequency Welding – Uses electromagnetic energy to bond thermal materials together with heat and pressure. They make fantastic quality seams and are ideal for very large products with multiple materials.
Hot Air Sealing: Using a nozzle to put hot air between two layers of material, the hot air sealing service is best suited for closed chamber or tube constructions. Works great for complex setups or on heavier material.
Hot Wedge Sealing: Service generally used when RF welding or hot air sealing cannot be used. It is a rigorous control method for plastic welding which makes it ideal for close dimensional tolerances.
You will need to be very selective about your builder, especially since it will help you make your product! You want to pay for a quality prototype with which you can present your idea! Considering that your builder will have more experience making different types of product, you can also ask them questions and better understand what can be one to improve the product, as well as get quotes for how much the product will cost.
