Moving home is always stressful: if you have a precious collection of dolls it’s only ten times worse. If you find yourself in the position where you need to move your entire doll collection to a new location, there are some precautionary measures to take that will reduce the chances of damaging your doll collection.
1. Don’t let the movers take your dolls.
No one else will take the same care of you when packing your dolls. Movers can be very adept at packing other items, but collectible dolls need special care when moved. If possible, don’t put dolls packed with the rest of your move in the van. If you have no choice, check the packaging of the boxes so that the boxes are not damaged and the heavier dolls are packed under the lighter dolls and not vice versa.
2. Make sure you are using sufficient packing materials:
You will need lots of bubble wrap, duct tape, wrapping paper, and boxes. The amount of packing material you will need will be determined by the types of dolls in your doll collection. Porcelain, porcelain and composition dolls will need most of the bubble wrap as each of their limbs will need to be wrapped separately. Hair and clothing will be of most interest with vinyl dolls, and newsprint-free wrapping paper is ideal for this purpose. If you have NRFB dolls (never remove from box), you need sturdy outer boxes to keep the doll boxes dent-free. Put the heavier dolls on the bottom; lighter dolls and doll clothes on top. If you have dolls that you are thinking of selling, do so before the move. It will save on packaging material and you can always use the money for all the packaging materials you need.
3. Mark the boxes well:
Marking the boxes well will not only make unpacking easier but also reduce the chances of someone accidentally throwing your porcelain doll box. When packing the removal vehicle, this will help ensure the heavier dolls are packed under the lighter dolls.
4. Attention to storage facilities:
Heat, humidity, and insects are enemies of most types of dolls. If you need to store your dolls for any length of time, please make sure our dolls are in an air-conditioned facility and that your insurance policy covers the dolls while they are in storage.
5. Make sure the dolls are properly secured:
Your homeowner’s policy may cover some parts of the insurance for your move. Most don’t cover breakage, however, and you’ll need to purchase breakage insurance from the moving company.
Doll shows and auctions
Next time, plan to visit a doll auction with the intention of purchasing a doll plan in advance and bring adequate packing material with you to ensure a safe journey home for your newly found dolls. If you have to fly home, it may be a better option to ship your dolls home and avoid the risk of damaging them in transit.
