Today more than ever, going green is incredibly important. I laugh at school, when we were shown movies with people in “baked potato clothes” going around, unable to stay outside without that dress. The idea of our world reaching a point where fresh air, clean water, and a safe environment were no longer available seemed outlandish to me. Fortunately, our children today do not see that future as invented. Children around the world are becoming more environmentally conscious and trying to find ways to protect mother Earth.
As parents we need to encourage this by example and opportunity. Here’s how you can help your child (s) go green! Recycling! Yes, recycling is one of the best ways to help save the environment and it’s free. It takes 100 years for 1 plastic bag to decompose. Think about how many plastic bags enter your home in a week. Recycle these bags by carrying a spare in the car, so you can carry your bags into the store while you shop. Ask your kids to collect bags around the house for recycling; whoever gets the most gets a reward.
Teach your kids how to conserve water. Instead of letting the water run the entire time you brush your teeth, wet your toothbrush, turn off the water, turn on to rinse, and then turn off. Encourage them to take faster showers or a bath. Did you know that the amount of water an adult would use in a three-minute shower is more water than most people in Africa have to use for all of their daily activities? If you children wash the dishes, have them fill one sink with hot soapy water, the other with clean water for rinsing. They can dry off with a towel or let them drip. Avoid using paper towels, use tea towels.
Water bottles are another big concern. If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, invest in a filter to taste better than water and ask your kids to refill the bottles you have instead of throwing them away.
Their toys encourage them to share them with friends instead of throwing them away. My daughter and her friends take one day a week to get together and trade toys. At first we were angry about it, but then we realized that every kid was giving them a new toy and they weren’t throwing the toys away. If other parents of your children’s friends aren’t thrilled with this idea, ask your child to collect the amount of toys they no longer want and go to the local homeless shelter, or talk to your doctor’s office to donate them to the nursery. games.
Talk to your child about ways he can make his school go green and ask him to introduce him with you to help the school go green as well.
