The biggest difference between a teddy bear and a stuffed toy like a Pokemon is probably in the price – I bet a teddy bear is a lot more expensive. And the second difference is in sales: Pokemon plush toys probably sell more than a thousand to one or more (possibly much larger) teddy bears.

Adults are much more interested in teddy bears than children. And it’s usually women who take an interest in them as collectibles and decorative items rather than pampering them at night.

Clearly, the teddy bear in previous years was tremendously popular, but as a doll showered with love and affection, it is now quite well forgotten. I know that as a child I never had a teddy bear nor did I know anyone who did, and I’m not a spring hen! Sure, there was Barbie, but who could possibly snuggle up on a Barbie doll?

Pokemon plush toys (known as stuffed animals) come in a variety of sizes and, like a quality teddy bear, aren’t as soft when new, although I imagine they acquire softness when handled over time. My son has it in bed with him, even though I’ve never seen him cuddle him. Much older children – teenagers indeed – also love to collect Pokemon rag dolls (especially popular now is any black and white Pokemon). And why?

Pokemon dolls are collectibles and toys. While the classic bear has a history and a legacy behind it, they have infiltrated the culture in other words, but they don’t have a history behind them and although teddy bears enjoy far more diversity than you might imagine at first glance, Pokemon I’m all about diversity – mutation in fact. There is a whole world behind Pokemon that makes collecting them almost like collecting artifacts; behind the Pokemon a pseudo-science is growing. This is something very different. You’ll never see a black and white teddy bear card game, but you can buy legendary Pokemon cards.

Not sure what teddy bears were. Relatively speaking, the toys were much more expensive than they are now. I guess a teddy bear has passed from generation to generation. Monetary value now reflects heritage and craftsmanship; Pokemon dolls represent popular and booming merchandising phenomena. The two are very different things, although I’m not sure if children’s feelings are that different.

In some ways, the two remain similar. In real life, bears are strong and dangerous animals. They may be soft, but they would never allow you to pamper them (most wouldn’t anyway). In fantasy, Pokemon are also dangerous creatures. But both, in doll form, look cute and harmless. Generally, people are afraid of scary things in the dark. Cute stuffed animals relieve that fear.
