Today is the day!

I was walking into a shop.

I saw a cashier return the money to this little boy saying “I’m sorry, but you don’t have enough money to buy this doll”.

Then the boy turned to the old woman next to him: “Granny, are you sure I don’t have enough money?”

The old woman replied, “ You know you don’t have enough money to buy this doll, my dear. ”

Then she asked him to stay there for 5 minutes while she went to look around. She quickly left.

The boy was still holding the doll in his hand.

Eventually, I went over to him and asked him who he would like to give this doll to.

“It’s the doll my sister loved the most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure Santa would bring it to her.”

I told him maybe Santa will bring it to him after all, and don’t worry.

But he replied sadly. “No, Santa can’t take it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mom so she can give it to my sister when she goes.”

His eyes were so sad as he said this. “My sister went to be with God. Dad says Mom will see God very soon too, so I figured she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.”

My heart almost stopped.

The kid looked at me and said, “I told dad to tell mom not to go yet. I need her to wait until I get back from the mall.”

Then he showed me a very nice picture of him laughing. Then she said “I want Mom to take my picture with her so she won’t forget me.”

“I love my mom and I wish she didn’t have to leave me, but dad says she has to go and stay with my little sister.”

Then he looked at the doll again with sad eyes, very quietly.

I quickly took my wallet and told the guy. “What if we check again, in case you have enough money?” “Ok,” he said, “I hope I’ve had enough.” I added some of my money to his without him seeing it and we started counting it. There was enough for the doll and some spare money too.

The little boy said, “Thank God for giving me enough money!”

Then she looked at me and added “Yesterday before I went to sleep I asked God to make sure I have enough money to buy this doll so that Mom can give it to my sister. She heard me!”

“I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mom, but I didn’t dare ask God too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose.”

“My mom loves white roses.”

A few minutes later, the old lady returned and I left with my basket.

I finished my shopping in a completely different state from when I started. I couldn’t get the kid out of my mind

Then I remembered a local newspaper article 2 days ago about a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car, where there was a young woman and a little girl.

The child died immediately and the mother remained in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to unplug the life-saving machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma.

Was this the little boy’s family?

Two days after this meeting with the boy, I read in the newspaper that the young woman was dead.

I couldn’t help myself as I bought a bouquet of white roses and went to the funeral home where the young woman’s body was displayed for people to see and make their last wishes before burial.

There she was, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose with the picture of the baby and the doll resting on her chest. I left the place, with tears in my eyes, feeling that my life had changed forever. The love this child had for his mother and her sister is still difficult to imagine today. And in a split second, a drunk driver had taken all of this away from him.
