There are a variety of options when it comes to adding a belly dish to yours reborn. Using a factory doll, you will need to remove the arms and legs and cut the belly and chest area and place it on your reborns padded body. By taking a sharp blade you will need to cut it to size so that it fits perfectly on your completed doll. The belly and back plates are now also available through the companies that sell the reborn kit and can be purchased alone or as part of a kit. These plates can be painted at the same time you paint your doll, keeping the layers consistent with what you are applying to the rest of the body. A blank abdominal plate purchased from a reborning supplier will have holes on both sides. If you choose to use a toy doll instead, you will need to remove the factory paint and drill these holes in it. When you’ve finished the detailing and skin layering and sealed your baby, it’s time to put your doll together, stuffing the doll’s leotard in preparation for the armor attachment.

There are two ways to attach the breastplate to your doll, you can take a piece of wire and wrap it around the back of the doll, entering the holes from the side and tying back to the back. Be careful to cut it carefully so that there are no sharp edges. Repeat for both the upper and lower series of holes. If you use a thin enough thread, tie it and cut it correctly, it will not be seen through the clothes. The other option is to sew the leotard into position by hand, this will reduce any movement in the plate and is more aesthetically pleasing from the back. Both methods work well in holding the plate in place to look like it has always been there.

These belly and back plates add another dimension to the realism of these reborns which sets them apart from those with just a suede bodysuit. Collectors are quite focused on collecting babies with plates attached due to the realistic look that simple body kits maybe don’t. When holding a reborn with dishes the difference is a more realistic feel and a little more appropriate clothing for a newborn. Another option if you don’t want to add a belly plate is a silicone slip known as a chicken fillet. These can also provide definition in the stomach and bottom area and also create a realistic feeling for the baby.
