“Choo Choo!” The train glides along the Amish Country Ohio tracks as it always has. After crossing a bridge, it goes down and then obediently folds to the track. A small group of farmers watch the train whiz past them. Then suddenly, a cow standing along the tracks leaps into the air and lands on one of the train carriages. Soon after, a tree beside the tracks does the same thing. Then suddenly the train stops abruptly. Passengers, including a fireman, a horse and a traffic sign, get off the train. The child then puts his hand back on the train and guides it back along the winding tracks.

From the tops to the trains

Many of us grew up playing with wooden toys, such as wooden toy trains. But have you ever wondered about the history of such toys?

Historians are uncertain about the year the wooden toys were first created. However, archaeologists have found evidence showing that ancient Greek and Egyptian children played with wooden toys. For example, toy floors made from various materials, including wood, have been discovered.

Then from 1700 to 1800 several innovations were made in the wooden toy industry. A boom in wooden toys occurred in the 18th century. This included making wooden alphabet blocks, small carved animals, and even wooden sleds. Then, in the following century, wooden toy cars were produced for the first time. These included trams and fire engines. Additionally, the world’s largest manufacturer of wooden toys was producing over 3.5 million wooden cars, trucks and trains by 1880!

Another boom in wooden toys occurred in America during the early part of the 20th century. In particular, wooden construction toys have become very popular in places like the Amish Country Inn Berlin Ohio. These included creating a new type of toy that included various shapes (e.g. sticks, spokes, coils, and rods) that were used to create items ranging from animals to vehicles to buildings. Then, in 1916, the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright launched a new type of wooden construction toys. These pieces consisted of connecting logs that were used to build cabins and other structures.

More than a toy

Today, if you are considering choosing a wooden toy train for your child, the age of the child is an important factor to consider. If a toy train is too difficult to assemble, your little one will easily get bored and play with another toy. On the other hand, if the train is too simple, the same result will occur. So try to find a train that challenges your child, but not too much.

The wooden train set you select can be a great tool for your baby’s development. Assembling and playing with the set can improve several aspects of its development. These activities can help improve your child’s motor skills, which involve small muscle groups. Toys can also be helpful in developing a child’s concentration and creativity. For example, many of the wooden train parts are movable, allowing children to create their own city and even some wild scenery that would be impossible in real life. In addition, riding and playing with the toy train can improve your child’s communication and social skills. While a child can have fun with wooden trains, they are always more fun if a parent or friend is around.

Today, children all over the world, including those from Amish Country Ohio, can enjoy the wooden toy trains. These toys have remained popular even though they don’t require power sources or controllers. However, the wooden trains are still effective in fostering the physical, mental and social development of children; and offering hours of fun. Everyone on board!
