We’ve all heard that a responsible adult should be no more than an arm’s length away from small children when in the pool. Makes sense, doesn’t it? The adult can grab them should they go under and stay with them to monitor their every movement. This is a great thing to practice, but there are obviously many other things that will help keep children safe around your pool.
Let’s start with a cover. If you have a cover, it should cover the entire pool and not have access to the water once it is open. Watch out for the pool of water above the cover and get rid of it quickly, as this is a drowning hazard of its own. Removable and movable sun covers are not considered pool covers and can have dire circumstances if a small child falls on top of one that is in the pool.
Pool toys are colorful and fun, but once everyone is out of the pool, all pool toys should come out too. This prevents children from looking for a toy and finding it in the pool, trying to reach it and eventually falling into it. If the toys are on the grass, that’s no problem. Another thing to remember is not to put any riding toys near the pool, children can get on and fall into the pool on the riding toy. These toys are not close to the pool area.
Speaking of pool areas, perhaps the biggest safety feature is a fence. It should be resistant to climbing and at least 4 feet tall. It should also encompass the entire pool area and have a self-closing and self-closing gate, again, one that cannot be climbed. Pool fences made of wire mesh are super easy to climb, so you want one with side stats with no more than 4 “between each. The harder it is to climb, the better because we want to keep the kids out of the whole area when the pool it is not available t in use.
Supervision is essential for pool safety, if you know where your children are you will know they are not in the pool area. Having rules from day one about not diving into a shallow pool and running on the pool deck, and not putting anything electronic near the pool will further teach your kids how to keep safe in the water.
