We have three small children all close in age. In the summer, they spend time in the community pool and enjoy some garden time in the sandbox and on the swing. As parents we want to encourage them to spend more time outside and less time in front of the television. We decided they could take advantage of some imaginative games, so we decided to build them a backyard theater.
We spent some time going through the books to find a style that we liked and that we thought suited their playing styles and personalities. In the end we opted for a two-story project with an elevated mezzanine and short stairs. The outside of the theater is vinyl, to match our home. We’re just finishing the bottom of the interior (at least for now) and wondered if anything would be gained by using the insulation between the posts, separating the outer wall panel from the interior drywall. After all, there would be no heating or cooling source in the theater. Did it matter if we put the isolation or not?
Ultimately, it’s a personal calling. We live in a climate where there is a lot of spring and fall, and both can have temperatures that vary in the 1950s. We thought that if our children actually used the playhouse, we should do what we could to make sure they were comfortable. We’d already done the wiring to get it electricity, so it seemed logical that with an oscillating fan or small ceramic heater, insulation would be a smart choice.
To help give the kids a sense of responsibility for their new “toy,” we asked for their help laying inexpensive vinyl flooring and fixing the wallboard joints. Their new special place should keep them happy and busy for hours on end.
